January 2022 Events of the Suncoast Genealogy Society

Wednesday, 05-Jan-2022, 1:00-4:00pm - SGS Help Desk at the Palm Harbor Library will REOPEN for in person assistance.  We have been given permission to begin meeting with folks looking for genealogy assistance.  Our normal  schedule of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1-4pm will resume beginning Wednesday, 05-Jan-2022.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Marianne Bradley.  We are especially in need of volunteers on the first Tuesday of each month.

Monday, 10-Jan-2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm - SGS DNA Interest Group in Person - We have been given permission to meet as a small group at the Palm Harbor Library. Jean Van Horn will present information about using Ancestry.com’s colored dot system to create groups and then using the groups to filter results, apply to a research project or question. 

Saturday, 22-Jan-2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm - SGS Membership Meeting via Zoom - What Happened to Great-Uncle George? A fun, genealogical whodunit demonstrating the use of Vivid-Pix Restore software for those who missed the presentation by owner Rick Voight.  Presented by Rosanne Bender

Tuesday, 18-Jan-2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm - SGS Help Desk in person- "Tech Tuesday" - Rosanne Bender will be offering computer assistance one Tuesday each month at the SGS Help Desk.  Watch for the schedule each month in the Searcher.  Or contact Rosanne to schedule a time to meet.

Finally from Marianne Bradley: "Our Holiday Party was a great success with Debbie Smyth and Jean Van Horn providing many intriguing trivia questions for us. Many on Christmas things and many on genealogy things. Very informative and fun with 16 of us sharing laughs and cheer."  Thank you to all who participated.  I know I for one was really disappointed I was not able to attend!

National Archives "Prologue Magazine" Has Article about Researching African Americans in the U.S. Army from 1866 to 1890

 You will find an article titled "Researching African Americans in the U.S. Army, 1866-1890" in the "Prologue Magazine" published by the National Archives. It focuses on Buffalo Soldiers and Black Infantrymen.

After giving a general introduction/history of the topic, the article covers the focused topics of  Enlisted Men and Officers. It also addresses the following record sets that are key in researching Black military ancestors in the 1966-1890 timeframe: Returns, Courts-Martial, Pensions, and Medals of Honor.

WAR OF 1812-- This class seeks to provide an understanding of the historical significance of the War of 1812: it looks at the causes of the war, how it was fought, and its consequences. Lineage Societies--the Hows and Whys of Joining--Learn tips for documenting your early arrival ancestors for lineage society use.  We will discuss what is a hereditary or lineage society, why you might want to join, and how to find the right ones for you.  Then we explain the paper trail requirements and what documentation you need to verify your tree is ready for submission. Mason City, Iowa Offers an Online Search of the Graves in its Elmwood - St. Joseph Cemetery

 Mason City, Iowa is home to the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. It is the combination of the Elmwood Cemetery, established in 1867, and the St. Joseph Cemetery, established in 1875. 

To do a name search, click on the tab in the left margin of the landing page that is labeled "Online Elmwood - St. Joseph Cemetery Search." Next click on the "Click Here" link in the first paragraph of the next page that appears. Then enter in the search box the name of the individual you are seeking.

A further explanation of a way to find the location of the grave by using an online map is also included in the cemetery explanation page.

Monday, 6-Dec-21 at 6:00 PM.  UNDERSTANDING HISTORICAL CAUSES OF DEATH-   Death certificates are important resources when researching the lives of our ancestors. However, due to factors such as outdated terminology and the limits of medical knowledge in the past, it can be hard to interpret the causes of death given. This presentation examines some of those factors, and points to resources that can help you find out what your ancestors really died of. Fortin
