First names were often abbreviation in historical documents, and even in modern day indexes of those documents to save space. So knowledge of those pesky abbreviations can be helpful in promoting your research.
Some abbreviations are fairly understandable: "Geo" for George and "Chas" for Charles. But some are not: "Hy" for Harry or "Xpr" for Christopher.
