Lee County Genealogical Society Features Dr. Paul R. Rivera on 16 Nov 2017

Lee County Genealogical Society, Inc.
November 16, 2017 Meeting
“From Baltimore to San Juan to Seville to . . . “ Reconstructing and Understanding the Millennium-long History of a Multi-Cultural Family

Dr. Paul R. Rivera

A career historian and genealogy newcomer, the presenter has pursued the history of his unique Puerto Rican-Irish family for the past decade. In previous programs for the Society, he has used the research of historians and the records of genealogy to trace his mother’s Irish family to County Monaghan in 1860 and father’s Puerto Rican family to the rural interior of that island in 1800.

This presentation will recount the latest chapter in the search for genealogical records and historical insights to reconstruct and interpret the historical experiences of his family. The research spans the past millennium in three nations and three historical eras – Puerto Rico during the Spanish colonial period, Spain and Portugal in the Renaissance and earlier in the Middle Ages. The program will conclude with a discussion of insights gained and lessons learned from the project that should prove useful to genealogists in search of their family history.
